Farthing Corner, Medway is part of the town of Chatham. The area is primarily residential. This article will show you some of the fascinating histories of this quaint neighborhood.
Roads leading out of this area also developed into distinct neighborhoods or regions. One was named Cliffe, which extended from Rochester Road to Cliffe Lane and then down to the river. The eastern end of Rochester Road became known as Farthing Corner, named after John Farthing, who ran the Star Inn there in the last few decades of the 18th century.
The original name for Farthing Corner was ‘the top of Liberty’. This is an unusual name, and where did it come from? In the medieval period, it was common for a town to be divided into wards which were further subdivided into liberties. These liberties had various names and were used as administrative areas, parishes, or sometimes both.
Farthing Corner appears not to have been an exception, and liberty called ‘the Liberty of St Mary’s is recorded in 1545. The St Mary’s in question was the mother church of Chatham. Still, other parishes were also included here, so it would appear that this liberty was created for each parish to have its area within the larger town where local laws and customs prevailed.
This gave villagers a form of independence from the outside influence, which they valued highly. Roads led out of the town at four points, one near each corner. The most westerly one was called Farthing Corner, so it would appear that this liberty had its entrance at this point or very nearby. Somewhere in the vicinity of St John’s church must have been the original center of the freedom since all roads leading towards Farthing Corner are said to have been contained within the Liberty of St Mary’s. In other words, they were parish roads and not main thoroughfares.
