About Newington, Sittingbourne, Kent

Newington Sittingbourne is a small village on Kent’s north coast, sandwiched neatly between Newington Green and Kingsdown. Newington residents are lucky to have their health, especially when getting about, thanks to the train station that provides frequent services to London and Canterbury. Newington is home to one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Kent. Newington Court, built around 1460 for Thomas Fiennes, Lord Dacre, is now Newington Preparatory School. Newington has its own water mill (which you can find featured on several postcards). Newington Green was once home to neoclassical artist Thomas Gainsborough, who moved to Newington in 1748. Newington was a separate parish for several centuries until it was absorbed into the Borough of Sittingbourne in 1934. Newington Sittingbourne is a trendy place to live with its picturesque countryside and stunning coastal views.

Newington is a village in the county of Kent, England.
It is situated on the River Swale about six miles southwest of Sittingbourne. St Augustine’s Abbey in Canterbury originally built the parish church. Still, after the dissolution, it became part of an estate owned by one family for many generations before being sold to its present owner, Sir Harry Djanogly Bt., who now maintains it as a private chapel.
The population peaked at around 500 people in 1851 and has since declined to just below 200 residents today.

Newington is most well known for its association with the fictional village of Flatford, home to 17th-century artists John Constable and JMW Turner. The adjoining bridge was where Constable set up his easel to paint one of his most famous works, “The Hay Wain.” This has been commemorated by a sign installed on the bridge by the Newington Parish Council.
A footpath from The Street in Newington follows the riverbank to Flatford Mill, and another path also goes to Old Hall Marshes, where cattle graze on summer pasture. The village’s population has dropped over the years, with several houses being demolished or abandoned and renovated by new owners. However, several young families have settled in Newington and brought new life to the village in recent years.

In addition to its many historical points of interest, the village has a pub called The Shoulder of Mutton, situated on The Street. It was featured in an episode of “The Trip” by Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, in which The Shoulder of Mutton was described as “the best pub in Kent.” The village also has a small hotel called the Manor House Hotel.

The Newington Flood Alleviation Scheme (NFA) is a major flood prevention scheme for Sittingbourne. The project will consist of an 8km (5 miles) long relief channel off the main river course between Ospringe and Newington. The scheme is critical to protect Sittingbourne from flooding into the existing town center and surrounding areas.

The Environment Agency has worked with Tendring District Council to allocate £3 million of government funding for an environmental survey which will be used to inform the design of the project.

Construction work started on 15 April 2010 and was completed in July 2011. The relief channel, which is expected to reduce water levels by 3 meters (9 feet) if a 100-year event (a one percent chance each year) were to occur, cost £5 million to construct and was designed by consulting engineers Gifford.

The relief channel was opened on 1 July 2011 by the Environment Minister, Lord Henley, accompanied by Sittingbourne & Sheppey Conservative MP Gordon Henderson and Swale Borough Council leader Cllr Aileen Jackson. The project has been jointly funded by the government (£3 million) and local councils (£2 million).

The Environment Agency has published a leaflet providing more information on the project. The Newington Flood Alleviation Scheme was featured in an episode of “Countryfile” in 2010.

On Thursday, 18 December 2014, heavy rainfall caused widespread flooding across southern England, resulting in over 300 properties flooding across the Sittingbourne area. This included some properties within the village of Newington.

The village is part of the electoral ward called Sea Mills. The population of this ward at the 2011 census was 4,003.
