About Stockbury, Sittingbourne, Kent
Stockbury is a fascinating name. Stockbury Hill is visible from large parts of Sittingbourne. Stockbury derives from the Old English words “stoc” and “burh”, meaning place or enclosure (“stock” being an old word for ‘animal’). A popular explanation for the town’s name is that Stockbury was once home to many goats kept at the Stockbury enclosure.
Another possible origin for Stockbury’s name is from two Celtic words – “stoc”, meaning stump, and “caer”, meaning fortress. It has been suggested that this was used by Celts to describe Stockbury Hill because of its shape. It would have been a rare fort, being built upon a low hill. There are other prehistoric landmarks nearby, including the Stockbury Ring Ditches, Iron Age earthworks on Halberry Lane.
Stockbury was referred to as “Stocabury” in the Domesday Book of 1086. The Domesday Book refers to Stockbury as being part of the Hundred of Luddenham in Kent. Stockbury was valued at 6 shillings. Stockbury’s church, St Michael-on-the-Hill, was constructed in the early 19th century and is still standing today.

Sittingbourne grew up around the medieval manor of Stockbury, which belonged to the Archbishop of Canterbury until 1539 when he surrendered it to King Henry VIII in exchange for another estate with more significant income potential. The parish church of St Mary’s traces its origins back even further – probably to Saxon times or earlier. It stands on a hill overlooking the town center and offers spectacular views over the countryside beyond.
Almost everyone who lives here today grew up elsewhere – they traveled down from London or Kent seeking work in the factories that were so plentiful here at one time before most closed down or moved away. There’s a lack of available housing, which is why so many people live in caravans and temporary structures, but some new homes are being built. A lot of people from Sittingbourne commute to London or Kent for work now.
