Twydall, Gillingham is a town in Kent. It was established by the Romans and has been continuously inhabited ever since.
It was initially called Twy-dhall, meaning “at the two fords.” The River Medway flowed through it to Rochester, where it joined with the River Thames before spilling into the English Channel at Portsmouth Harbour.
Gillingham became an important industrial center during Victorian times because of its railway connections and proximity to London. Today it is still home to several factories, including one that produces Mars Bars for export worldwide. Twydall, Gillingham’s population today stands at about 18000 people, making it one of Kent’s largest towns after Maidstone and Ashford. Twydall is well known for the many statues and monuments that grace its streets and public buildings:

1) The statues to Henty, the inventor of the woolly hat, and John Player, who founded a tobacco company;
2) The memorial was erected in 1869 to commemorate local men who died during the Crimean War (1854-1856);
3) The war memorial near the station commemorates the men from Twydall who died in two world wars.
It is also a town that boasts several pubs, a youth club, and multiple churches. Three schools serve its population: St Richard’s Catholic School, Tudeley Church of England Primary School, and Bishops Down Secondary School.
St Richard’s was built in 1962 and has a pupil roll of about 1150 children aged between 4 and 11 years old. It caters to children from all over Kent but particularly those living in the nearby towns of Gillingham and Chatham.
Bishops Down Secondary School was established as “Rochester Grammar School” in 1947 by Dr. Cyril Alington, the Headmaster of Eton College. After World War II, it became a secondary modern school for boys and later a comprehensive school for both sexes. Having become grant-maintained in 1993, it became a foundation school in 2003. It has approximately 1200 students aged between 11 and 16 years old.
At the beginning of the 2009 academic year, this school had an Ofsted rating of “3”, which means “Satisfactory.”
Tudeley Church of England Primary School was built in 1845 on land donated by the Tudeley family. It is an “Aided School” under the control of Kent County Council (KCC), and it caters to boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 11 years old.
